We knew the places to eat, the parks to play at, and that it was a good idea to stop at the hotel for Quincey to nap and the girls to get a midday swim. We found a super fun souvenir shop and had the best day touring the sites we hadn't seen the first two days.
We stopped and walked along a picturesque boardwalk that wound along the river and cliffs. It was cool to be able to get up close to a lot of petroglyphs.
It was also fun to stop and look in the Fruita schoolhouse. It was perfectly preserved and was a big eye-opener to our Girls as to how school used to be for kids so long ago.
We chose a canyon to drive through, because everyone was too hot and sweaty to do another hike in the sun. We drove as far as we could, then got out and explored a bit.
The girls finished their Jr. Ranger Books and picked out matching Deer stuffties. They were pretty excited to bring them along on our hike. |
The newest Jr. Rangers! |
We stopped for lunch at the Gifford Home. It was a beautiful place, and since the picnic tables were too far away / in the sun, we set up camp right under the tree. Greg and I got our pies, and the girls ate whatever was left in the cooler for lunch. Quince loved crawling around and being told by everyone walking by how cute she was.
After lunch we headed back to the hotel so Quincey and Greg could get a much-needed nap, and so I could take the girls Souvenir Shopping. I had a hankering to find something fun, and fun we did! Afterwards, we stopped to play at the local park.
After Greg and Quincey's nap, we went on one last hike before dinner. We chose to walk up a riverbed to see more petroglyph's. The cool thing about Capitol Reef is how remote it is - and how easily you can explore without being interrupted. We found a lot of petroglyphs!
We found a lot of cool Caves to climb up in. |
I'm pretty sure Claire was a mountain goat in her previous life. |
Left in the dust, because Greg is much cooler to hike with than me.
After dinner, and because it was our last night, everyone was craving ice cream. Torrey, UT is the smallest town I have ever been in, and that's saying something because I'm from Southern Utah, where all of the towns are small. We quickly learned that if you want something, you need to eat it before 7:00pm, which is when the whole town basically shuts down. We learned this a bit late, and had to stop at the General Store to buy the most expensive pint of ice cream I've ever bought. But, it was worth it and we all finished it in five minutes flat, sitting on the floor of our hotel room, watching TV. It makes for a fun story, anyways.
Capitol Reef was so fun! We explored, swam, played, ate, and saw many beautiful things. We might not make it back for many years, but it was fun while it lasted.
On our way home, it was fun to stop and have lunch with some of our Logan friends who live in Richfield. Our kids loved playing together, and it make me really wish we lived closer. Maybe one day, right Greg? 😉
